Who is calirob?

It’s more than a catchy digital moniker.

My family immigrated to the United States from Scotland shortly after I was born so my father could accelerate his medical research at the National Institutes of Health in Washington D.C.  He is a world-renowned molecular neurologist who has spent his life researching various brain diseases such as Alzheimer's, Parkinson’s, and migraine headaches. My mother is an English teacher and super-mum to three rowdy boys. They had to adapt to an entirely new culture and navigate putting their kids into an unfamiliar school system. For two highly accomplished academics, this was hard and uncomfortable. But for us kids, these schools and the culture immediately became the norm. It’s where we learned how to speak like Americans and made our first friends.

Calirob is a persona that reflects 40 years of lived experience and insights that have shaped who I am and the person I aspire to become. I’ve always been fascinated by people and consider myself a student of culture and creativity. It’s the human connections, relationships, and unexpected stories that unfold that inspire me. My passion for storytelling stems from being exposed to the world through a variety of cultural perspectives and the incredible relationships that I have formed along the way.

We moved from D.C. to California in the late 80s when my dad got a job at The California Institutes for Technology (Caltech) in Pasadena. I grew up in La Cañada Flintridge and have lived most of my life in the Southern California area. I was the middle child and undoubtedly the most problematic of the Harrington boys. I have always been very social and many of my teachers said I was hyperactive. I played almost every sport and leveraged my competitive skills to make friends. I remember being embarrassed about my parents’ accent and my Scottish heritage. Like most angsty teens, I just wanted to fit in and be cool.
